Dr. King was once a young leader who made the old guard uncomfortable. Over a decade later, it was King who was being challenged by a new generation of leaders. To his credit, he didn't try to categorically stop them but he also failed to fully appreciate that, just as he felt he was right in ruffling feathers in his day, young leaders like Stokely Carmichael were doing the same in the mid-sixties.

The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, led by Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Bob Moses and many others, was a radical experiment to reform democracy. But white power beat back their efforts at reform and ultimately, the movement was absorbed by the system.

White folks were told to integrate their schools but rather than do that, they opted to simply close schools. That meant many white children went without an education altogether but that was preferable to sitting next to Black children. Perhaps civil rights leaders should have taken the hint and opted for another strategy.

Operation Breadbasket was a program that showed great promise for Black economics. Jesse Jackson did amazing things through the program in Chicago, which Dr. King wanted replicated nationally, but it never happened.
